Mistakes to avoid
- Confusing gross burn and net burn. "We only burn €20K/month" when you have €10K/month revenue means you're actually burning €20K net. Always use net burn for runway calculations.
- Not accounting for one-time costs. A large legal bill, a hardware purchase, or a contractor payment can spike burn for one month. Model these separately.
- Optimistic revenue projections. Founders consistently overestimate revenue and underestimate burn. Use conservative revenue assumptions for runway calculation.
- Not modeling hiring into the burn. Adding a new hire doesn't just add salary — it adds employer Social Security, benefits, and often increased software/equipment costs. Model fully-loaded cost.
- Ignoring Spanish tax timing. IVA and Social Security are predictable but large. If you don't plan for them, they can create cash crises unexpectedly.
- Not maintaining a cash buffer. The minimum cash reserve should be 3 months of gross burn. Below 2 months is emergency level. At 0 months, you're days from insolvency.
- Raising too late. By the time a startup "needs" to raise, it has already lost negotiating leverage. Start fundraising when you have 12-15 months of runway, not 6.
- Using bridge as a long-term solution. A bridge round that doesn't get you to the next milestone is just delaying an inevitable down round or failure. Use bridge financing sparingly and strategically.
- Not tracking CAC by channel. If you don't know which marketing channels are profitable, you can't optimize. Track CAC by channel from day one.
- Ignoring FX risk for LatAm or USD-denominated costs. If your revenue is in BRL or EUR but your costs are in USD (AWS, Google Cloud, Stripe fees), FX movements can dramatically affect your actual burn rate. Hedge or model this explicitly.
